Commodities and currencies
Gold and silver at Bank of Russia prices (in rubles per gram and converted to dollars per ounce), oil from EIA data, currencies at the official rates of the Bank of Russia and the Fed. Commodities pay no dividends: the return is only the price change.

“CAGR” is the average yearly price growth over 10 years (over 5 or 3 years if the history is shorter). Drawdown is the worst over the whole history of the series. Regime is the rule of the 10-month average and the one-year change. Without dividends unless stated otherwise. Gold and silver
- At the end of January 2026, gold set a new record (about $5,600 an ounce spot), and by the end of October it was about 30% cheaper.
- Central banks remain big buyers: 289 tonnes in Q2 2026, a record for a second quarter (World Gold Council).
- Silver swings more than gold, and in 2026 it also moved far from its January peak.
Oil
- The war around Iran since late February 2026 and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz pushed spot Brent to $138 in April, the highest since 2008; at the end of October it was about $123.
- This is the spot price from EIA data; Brent futures were $10–15 cheaper on the same days.
- For Russia, oil means the budget, the ruble exchange rate and the profits of most of the index.
Currencies
- Bank of Russia official rates for 31 October 2026: 80.56 rubles per dollar, 12.09 per yuan, 89.66 per euro.
- Since the start of 2026, the ruble has weakened by 2.9% against the dollar and by 7.7% against the yuan.
- A currency rate earns nothing by itself: the return comes from investments in that currency.
Risks
- Oil has lost more than 90% (April 2020) and doubled within a year (2026).
- After its 2011 peak, gold took several years to recover.
- The price of a metal in rubles is the price of the metal and the ruble exchange rate at the same time.
