8 instrumentsThree things worth knowing about any market
Before you compare returns, it is worth understanding where they come from.
Where the return comes from
Stocks bring a share of company profits, bonds bring interest, and gold and crypto bring only price changes. That is why stocks and bonds have a “built-in” return, while gold and crypto do not.
The price of risk
The higher a market’s average return, the deeper its falls: for crypto, drawdowns of 80–90% are a normal part of its history; for bonds, they are rare.
Account currency
An index rising in rubles and rising in dollars are different things: when the ruble falls, an index in rubles can rise while it stands still in dollars.
