US and world: 70 years of monthly stock prices

The ten largest stock markets (the US, Germany, the UK, France, Japan, Korea, China, India, Brazil and Canada) by OECD monthly price indexes. For slow rules such as the 10-month average, a month is a natural step.

The numbers are calculated in your browser from fresh source candles.

“CAGR” is the average yearly price growth over 10 years (over 5 or 3 years if the history is shorter). Drawdown is the worst over the whole history of the series. Regime is the rule of the 10-month average and the one-year change. Without dividends unless stated otherwise. What the set includes

  • OECD monthly share price indexes, 2015 = 100, in national currency and without dividends.
  • There are no daily candles for the US and other countries here: exchanges and index providers (S&P, Nasdaq) allow their quotes to be shown only under a license. You can open your own daily data in the lab as a CSV file.

The US in 2026

  • On 30 October the S&P 500 closed at 7,580 points: +10.7% year to date; the record is 7,819 (6 October).
  • On 16 September the Fed raised its rate to 3.75–4.00%, the first increase since 2023; inflation for September was 3.7%.
  • The four largest tech companies spend about $725–745 billion a year on AI infrastructure; Shiller’s cyclically adjusted P/E is about 40, close to its 1999 peak.

The world in 2026

  • The Nikkei 225 rose by about a quarter over the year, while India’s Nifty 50 and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng declined.
  • The ECB raised its deposit rate to 2.50%, and the Bank of Japan raised its rate to about 1.25%: energy prices are rising again.
  • IMF (July 2026): the world economy will grow by 3.0%, and the decline in global inflation has stopped.

Lessons from history

  • The Japanese market took more than 30 years to return to its 1989 peak: long drawdowns happen in developed countries too.
  • High economic growth does not guarantee stock returns: the purchase price and company profits matter.
  • Access from Russia: since 2025, only qualified investors can buy foreign securities, except those recorded in the infrastructure of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU).
